Best Time to Travel to Heathrow to Avoid Traffic

After hundreds of thousands of Heathrow transfers from across Surrey, we've learned exactly when the roads bite and when they don't. This guide distils that knowledge into practical advice you can use to plan your next airport journey.

The Worst Times to Travel

Weekday morning rush (7:00–9:30am): The M25 between Junction 7 (M23) and Junction 15 (M4) is consistently the most congested stretch of motorway in the UK during this window. Journey times from Redhill can almost double. If your flight departs before 11am, your pickup time will sit in this window — allow significant extra time.

Weekday afternoon rush (4:00–7:00pm): The M4 into Heathrow becomes very slow from around Junction 4. If you're collecting from or dropping to Heathrow in this window, expect delays on the approach roads and in the terminal areas themselves.

Sunday evenings (5:00–8:00pm): Possibly the most underestimated traffic period. The combination of leisure returnees, start-of-week business travellers and reduced road workers means Sundays between 5pm and 8pm see sustained congestion on the M25 and A3.

School holiday Fridays: The week before school half-terms and the start of the summer holidays generates extraordinary demand on the M25 and A23/A24. A standard 45-minute journey can stretch to 90 minutes on these days.

The Best Times to Travel

5:00–6:30am: Early morning offers the clearest roads of the day. Journeys that take 45 minutes mid-morning can be completed in 30–35 minutes at this time. Many of our customers with 7am or 8am flights prefer a 4:30am pickup precisely for this reason.

10:00am–12:00pm (weekdays): After the morning rush clears, mid-morning offers reasonable road conditions. This is a good window for passengers catching mid-day flights.

8:00pm–midnight: Evening travel is generally smooth once the afterwork rush has dissipated. Heathrow's terminal forecourts are also significantly quieter after 9pm, making drop-off and collection quicker.

Time Planning Tips

Add 20% buffer time. If your driver estimates 45 minutes, treat the journey as 55 minutes and plan accordingly.
