Luton Airport Guide: Transfers, Parking & Terminals
A complete guide to Luton Airport — how to get there from Surrey, where to be dropped off, and what to expect inside.
London Luton Airport (LTN) is primarily a low-cost carrier hub situated in Bedfordshire, approximately 30 miles north of London. From Surrey, it's the furthest of the main London airports — but it handles a huge volume of Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air traffic, so it's a regular destination for our passengers.
Journey Time from Surrey
Luton sits on the north side of the M25 ring, which means you cross or skirt around London to reach it from Surrey.
Typical journey times: - Redhill to Luton: 75–95 minutes - Reigate to Luton: 80–95 minutes - Guildford to Luton: 80–100 minutes - Crawley to Luton: 80–95 minutes - Brighton to Luton: 100–120 minutes
These times assume reasonable traffic conditions on the M25 and M1. Both can be significantly worse during peak hours — we always advise allowing extra time for Luton transfers.
Airlines at Luton
Luton is primarily a low-cost carrier airport:
- **Ryanair** — the dominant carrier, with routes across Europe - **easyJet** — significant presence, particularly leisure routes - **Wizz Air** — major hub for Eastern European routes - **TUI** — package holiday flights - **Jet2** — leisure destinations
The Terminal
Unlike Heathrow and Gatwick, Luton has a single terminal building. This simplifies things considerably — there's no risk of arriving at the wrong terminal.
Drop-off: The passenger drop-off zone is directly outside the terminal building. A drop-off charge applies — currently around £5 for up to 10 minutes. Budget this into your planning.
Arrivals: The arrivals hall is on the ground floor of the terminal. Your driver will wait with a name board as you exit.
Note on the shuttle: If you are arriving by Thameslink train at Luton Airport Parkway station (the rail station), there is a shuttle bus to the terminal. However, when you book our service you'll be met directly at the terminal — no shuttle needed.
Practical Tips for Luton
- **Security can be slow:** Luton's security lanes are smaller than Heathrow or Gatwick. Allow extra time, especially on summer weekend mornings. - **Check-in closes earlier for low-cost carriers:** Ryanair in particular closes check-in 40 minutes before departure — don't cut it fine. - **The car park drop-off charge:** As noted above, pick-up and drop-off within the forecourt now incurs a fee. This is paid by the driver on your behalf and included in our quoted price.
