Travelling with a Newborn Baby by Taxi: A Parent's Guide

The safest way to travel to the airport with a very young baby — car seat rules, positions, and what to pack for the journey.

Travelling with a newborn baby requires a different level of care than travelling with older children. Here's a practical guide for parents planning an airport transfer with a very young baby.

Car Seat Requirements for Newborns

Babies from birth must travel in a rear-facing infant seat (Group 0 or Group 0+). These seats face backward and are secured by the car's seatbelt. This is the safest position for a baby in a vehicle — the rear-facing orientation protects the head, neck and spine in a frontal impact.

UK law: A baby cannot legally travel in a vehicle without an appropriate child restraint. There is no age exemption for taxis with pre-bookable child seats.

When booking, tell us your baby's age and approximate weight. We'll fit the correct infant carrier before your pickup. There is no charge for child seats.

Positioning and Safety

For very young babies (under 4 weeks), keep the journey time reasonable and check on your baby periodically. Babies should travel in the semi-reclined position recommended by the seat manufacturer — avoid seats that put the baby in a fully upright position.

The 2-hour rule: most manufacturers advise that babies under 4 weeks should not travel in a car seat for more than 2 hours continuously. For most Surrey to airport journeys, this is within the window — but worth bearing in mind for longer transfers to Stansted or Luton.

What to Pack for the Journey

Keep these accessible (not in the hold luggage): - Nappies and wipes (at least 3–4 per hour of travel) - A change of clothes for the baby — and a change for you - Muslins - Formula or a feeding plan for the journey

Buggy and Car Seat at the Airport

Most airlines allow you to check in your pram or buggy free of charge at the gate. You'll carry it through the terminal and hand it over at the jetbridge, collecting it at the aircraft door on arrival. Your infant seat typically travels in the hold as checked luggage (also usually free).
