Travelling with Ski Equipment: Airport Transfer Tips
Ski bags, boot bags, poles — travelling with ski gear requires the right vehicle. Here's everything you need to know.
Ski season generates some of our busiest transfer periods — January and February in particular see high demand for vehicle options that can accommodate ski bags. Here's how to plan your ski trip transfer correctly.
The Core Problem with Ski Transfers
A ski bag containing two pairs of skis typically measures 160–190cm long. This simply does not fit in the boot of a standard saloon car with other luggage. The right vehicle is non-negotiable.
Recommended Vehicles for Ski Transfers
Estate car: Fits one ski bag (skis removed from bindings and stacked flat) in the extended load area, plus 2–3 suitcases. For a couple with a ski bag each, it's a squeeze — test fit in advance.
People carrier (MPV): Rear seats fold flat to accommodate two ski bags plus substantial luggage. The standard recommendation for families or couples with multiple ski bags.
Minibus: For a group of 4–6 skiers each with equipment — the only sensible option.
Always mention ski equipment explicitly when booking, including the number of ski bags and approximate length. We'll confirm the right vehicle.
Airline Rules for Ski Equipment
Most airlines charge for ski equipment as sports baggage:
- **British Airways:** Sports equipment fee, typically £50–100 return on long-haul - **easyJet:** £35–50 per flight, pre-booked online - **Jet2:** Often more ski-friendly — check your booking for included sports equipment allowance - **Tui:** Usually includes ski equipment in package holiday bookings
Key rule: Ski boots are often treated as standard checked luggage if packed in a separate bag within weight limits. Consider packing boots and helmet in your checked case to save the sports equipment fee.
Ski Boot Bags
Ski boot bags are typically small enough to fit in the boot of any vehicle alongside standard luggage. They can often be counted as regular checked luggage. Confirm with your airline at the time of booking.
Airport Handling
On departure, check your ski bag at the oversize/sports equipment desk, which is usually separate from the standard check-in area. Allow extra time for this — particularly at Gatwick South Terminal where the oversize desk can have a queue.
On return, oversize luggage including ski bags is delivered to a separate belt — usually labelled "oversize" or "special handling." Allow additional time after landing.
